This collection consists primarily of letters, 1861-1865, from John Hampden Chamberlayne to family members concerning his service in the 21st Virginia Infantry, and the Purcell, the Crenshaw, and the Davidson Artillery Batteries, C.S.A. In great detail, Chamberlayne describes his life in camp and his participation in the Romney, 1862 Maryland, and Petersburg Campaigns, as well as in the battles of 2nd Bull Run, Cedar Mountain, and Chancellorsville, Va. Other items in the collection include copies of official letters, 1864, regarding Chamberlayne's promotion to captain of Davidson's battery.
